Graphic Applications in Rotational Molding

Decoration or graphic enhancement of plastic parts is a very important feature of many rotationally molded parts. They are frequently used as informational diagrams or instructions as well as eye-catching logos that promote the final product. Graphics are available in three types:

1. Adhesive Post-mold Graphics
  • Applied using an adhesive backing after the part has been molded
  • A section of the mold is polished creating a smooth surface on the part for ease of application
2. "Flame-on" Graphics
  • Made from a similar polymer to that of the final part
  • Applied to a smooth portion of the part and then heat treated with a flame
  • Heat treating allows the graphic to partially melt into the surface of the part
  • A permanent bond to the part is formed
3. "Mold-in" Graphics
  • Made from a similar polymer to that of the final part
  • Graphic is applied to the mold surface and the powder melts onto the graphic during the molding process
  • The graphic is permanently attached to the part
  • Graphics are as UV, scratch, and chemically resistant as the rest of the molded part
